FAQ

  • What is varicose veins?

Varicose veins is a term often used to describe everything from smaller, spider veins (red or blue veins on the surface of the skin) to true varicose veins (swollen, bulging veins with a rope-like appearance). Varicose veins are quite common, affecting 15 percent of men and 25 percent of women. Varicose vein symptoms can include swelling, leg fatigue and tiredness, leg pain, as well as burning and itching sensations.

  • What are the causes of varicose veins?

Varicose veins are almost always associated with venous reflux, which occurs when the valves in the leg veins don’t work well and backward blood flow causes pooling in the lower leg. Without proper treatment, the pressure on the veins may increase over time and cause more varicose veins and symptoms. People with a family history of varicose veins and who are older, obese or are pregnant are at increased risk of developing varicose veins.
