Endovenous Laser Ablations

Endovenous laser therapy is a safe, quick and minimally invasive alternative treatment procedure that uses laser energy to eliminate varicose veins. Instead of traditional vein stripping surgery, where abnormal veins are tied and removed, the therapy destroys them by heating the walls of the abnormal vessels. Dead vein tissues are naturally absorbed by the body and quick and leaves no scar, has a short and relatively pain-free post-operative recovery period, and may be performed under local or general anesthesia. The therapy can be carried out in a simple treatment room rather than a surgery room.

Endovenous Laser Therapy Procedure

Using ultrasound, the veins to be treated are marked. Your vein surgeon at the Varicose Vein MC Care will position the laser fibre into the diseased vein, through a small hole in the skin. A small amount of local anesthetic is injected into the skin over the vein and a needle inserted into it. A wire is passed through the needle and up the vein. The laser is then heat up and pulled down the vein over about 5 minutes. The heat is directed through a catheter to close up the targeted veins and leave them in place, so there is very minimal bruising and bleeding. As the fiber is withdrawn, the vein is re-routed through other healthier veins.

Following the procedure, most patients can quickly return to normal activities. Walking is encouraged and normal daily activities can be resumed immediately. However strenuous physical activity and heavy exercises should be avoided for three to four weeks. Any bruising or soreness is temporary and improved with the pain relief medications prescribed by your vein surgeon.

The treatment itself will take less than one hour. You should be able to resume normal activities within 1-2 days. Patients report minimal to no scarring, bruising or swelling following the procedure.
